It's worth remembering that you would not normally have any cavalry with the size of infantry force that you would see in a typical SP2 game, and certainly not the smaller sort of games you would have with a mate of an evening. What tends to work better is either an all-cavalry game (possibly with some mounted skirmishers), or one where the infantry are in the minority and have to keep out of the way and watch themselves. Get three or four (or more) cavalry "8s" on the table, and they will (a) last longer, and (b) you can use them more realistically.

Or, and one good thing about SP, is that French Dragoons, work properly by being competent fismounted as well as mounted.

EB is pretty rules agnostic. He can have his cavalry slaughtered under any rule set.

I'm not sure the activation rules caused you to get off your horses, get back on, get back off and then get back on again. All in a small field with one gate that had no tactical relevance.
