What are good painting colours for elephants ? I'm sure I'll get sensible answers

forest or indian/malay?

indians, basically grey, dark grey, fleshtones in patches, brown, dark brown to almost black. much more varied than plains elephants (the big african ones).

look up vids of elephant sanctuaries, they vary a lot more than you think.

I think they prefer sculpting to painting, so perhaps get them a set of stonemason's tools?

Otherwise I'd pretty much go with what Fredd said. Much like horses, there is a surprising amount of "flesh" on display.

Vallejo Panzer Aces Track Primer (304), AP Strong Tone Wash, drybrush the Track Primer again.

How I did mine, and I reckon they’re pretty close to the real thing I think

Luckily you can't go far wrong with a mix of greys and light to mid browns plus a smattering of pinkish flesh colours but not this far.
