There was a nice humbrol acrylic red I had a few years ago before they went awol - wonder if they have one now?

You probably need to start darker so that your highlight is a pure red. For a really saturated red I usually basecoat Khorne Red, wash with Agrax Earthshade, Khorne Red again and then highlight with Mephiston Red.

I've no personal experience but have heard good things about the AK Interactive 3rd gen acrylic "Intense" range :

There's certainly one in their acrylic range but I've got no idea whether it's the same formulation. Humbrol seem to have a bad habit of tinkering with their paint mixes.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I wonder if my issue is that I'm trying too much with not enough blending, so the highlight is being used too much. I shall try a 4 stage red on a test figure and see how that looks.

I do like those. The massed effect with 6mm is always impressive. Almost tempting me to get back to my WSS forces.
